This year I will be using Remind.
This is a great and safe system in which I can send
text and/or email reminders to students and parents.
Class reminders will be sent from a secure website.
I will never receive a personal phone number and there
is no way to respond to the texts.

We took 10 minutes to finish up our mini-biography.
We began a schema-building activity for the novel we'll be reading this quarter titled The Other Side of the Sky. This is an incredible memoir of a girl from Afghanistan that makes her way to America. We read several articles about things going on in the Middle East to better understand the novel.
We took the district student learning objective in class. If students were absent, they will need to come before or after school to make it up.
We did our first set of starters. Monday through Thursday we have a Word of the Day followed by a short writing prompt that we call a scribble. Students do not need to make this up when they are absent, but do need to complete them each day that they are present. They will receive a participation grade for their starters at the end of the quarter.
We then worked on a mini-biography worksheet where students tell a little about themselves in a simple way. This assignment is designed to be a great opportunity for students to show quality work.
Students got a chance to learn a little about me today. I will be sending a letter home concerning this, but I let the students know that I will be gone for a few weeks due to my daughter having open heart surgery on September 20. This will mean that I will not be in attendance for Student Led Conferences, but will be arranging for times to meet with any parents that would like to have a conference the week prior.
We also worked on putting together our class folders that will contain our reading assignments, class goals, and returned, graded work. We discussed class procedures and went over this website. We also talked about our reading assignment for the year. We will discuss book projects next week.

First day of class! We talked about our new school-wide rewards and consequences. We also read a book titled, "Only One You," and talked about how we are all unique and awesome. Then, we made fish that will be hung up in the classroom all year so that Mrs. Reid can keep a piece of her students with her all year. =)
